Using AI and Travel Agents Together
Using AI tools when planning travel is a fantastic way to pick up some trips, tricks, and hacks that you may not have ever heard of. However using AI when planning anything, you need to use it responsibly but also keep it honest as well. Ai engines like OpenAI, Gemini, Claude.AI and Perplexity are fantastic tools but they are not perfect by any means. They hallucinate and in some case plain out make things up.
What AI Does Well
AI can generate itinerary drafts, compare options, and answer basic questions. It works for brainstorming destinations, creating packing lists, and researching typical costs. You can also tell your AI engine to take on a specific role to help you get more reliable answers.
For example you are a big cruiser. You normally travel to the Caribbean but you are now going on a Alaskan Cruise. Do not just chat with your agent and ask to “Plan my cruise trip to Alaska” be more detailed to get far more useful answers. Example: “I am a seasoned cruise traveler to the Caribbean, my next cruise is to Alaska. What so different in the way I need to pack for Alaska compared to the Caribbean?”
Your output will me much more detailed, giving you suggestions, packing lists and in some cases complete packing lists from reputable web sites like USA Today and US News just to name a few.
Another great example of using AI to help with planning or learning new things is giving the AI a Role to take on. For example instead of asking ” Any Hidden Tips on the Carnival Mardi Gras?” Tell your AI Agent ” You are a former crew member on the Carnival Mardi Gras for the last 6 years. Tell me some Hidden Gems, Off Menu Items and quiet areas that only crew members or veteran cruisers know about.”
Your results will be far more specific and give you some cool info. Provide some interesting results too.

What AI Does Not Do
While AI is impressive, let’s be real—it still has some major blind spots when it comes to planning travel.
For starters, AI doesn’t have access to live inventory or real-time pricing. It can’t book your trip, hold a reservation, or process your payment. So, if you’re hoping for instant confirmation or guaranteed availability, you’re out of luck.
But here’s where it gets trickier—AI can’t problem-solve when things go sideways. Flight delays, cabin changes, last-minute cancellations, or even a missing document at the gate? You need a real person—someone who can get on the phone with the cruise line or airline and handle it fast. That’s not something a chatbot can do.
And let’s not forget: AI doesn’t know you. A seasoned travel agent asks the right questions—about mobility needs, dietary restrictions, previous travel hiccups, or your budget. That context matters. Because what sounds like a great deal online might actually be a nightmare for your specific needs.
Where Travel Agents Add Value
Booking complexity: Travel agents handle multi-leg trips, group bookings, and packages that require coordinating flights, transfers, hotels, and cruise cabins. They know which combinations work and which create problems.
Industry relationships: Agents have direct contacts at cruise lines and access to inventory not available to the public. They can request cabin upgrades, resolve billing errors, and escalate issues when needed.
Problem resolution: When something goes wrong during travel, an agent can rebook flights, reroute itineraries, and contact suppliers on your behalf. AI cannot make phone calls or negotiate on your behalf.
Regulation and requirements: Entry requirements, visa processing, and health documentation change frequently. Agents verify current rules and flag potential issues before you reach the port.
Hidden costs: Agents know which advertised deals include hidden fees, which promotions stack, and which “discounts” are actually standard pricing. They compare total costs, not just initial prices.
How to Use Both
Use AI for initial research and planning. Generate itinerary ideas, draft packing lists, and explore destination options. For example, are you visiting somewhere you never have been to? Or maybe you have been there before but want some inside info. Try chatting with your AI agent to get some inside.

Bring that research to a travel agent. They will verify details, check availability, and book what makes sense. They will also correct bad information and suggest alternatives you did not consider.
During the trip, contact your agent if problems occur. After the trip, AI can help you organize photos or plan the next one.
Practical AI Prompts for Pre-Agent Research
Packing comparison: “Create a capsule packing list for a 7-night Caribbean cruise in June with two formal nights. Include 10 essentials and note 3 items often brought but rarely used.”
Destination research: “What are the key differences between Caribbean and Alaska cruise excursions? Include typical climate, footwear needs, and activity types.”
Budget planning: “Estimate typical costs for a 7-day Caribbean cruise including port fees, gratuities, excursions, and onboard spending for two adults.”
Verify Everything
AI provides outdated or incorrect information regularly. Do not rely on AI for visa requirements, health documentation, entry rules, or safety policies.
Check official sources: U.S. Department of State travel advisories, CDC travel health notices, and cruise line policies posted on their official websites.
Your travel agent will verify current requirements as part of the booking process.
How I use It
I use AI in a number of ways. I use it for automation, I use it to create social media posts, packing lists, videos, and so much more. I also use it to provide clients with a tool that they can use to research their travel styles, get inspiration on where to travel or things to do.
Example have you tied my Travel Inspiration Utility on the homepage? It will email you a detailed email with some inspiration and a Top Pick that fits what you were looking for. Answer a few questions and i configure AI in the background to do the rest. Try it out!

Bottom Line
AI is a research assistant. Travel agents are professionals who book, verify, and solve problems. Use AI to explore options and prepare questions. Use travel agents to make it happen correctly.
