Thinking about sailing the Caribbean? We just cruised on the Carnival Mardi Gras, and here’s everything you should know — from the fun to the realistic downsides of this mega-ship.
Yes, there’s a roller coaster on board. 🎢 Carnival’s Bolt is the first ride of its kind at sea, and it’s just one example of how this ship takes Caribbean cruising to a whole new level. Although it is a upcharge AND broken most of the time, which was a disappointment. Whether you’re a first-time cruiser or a seasoned traveler, this ship offers a mix of excitement, relaxation, and culinary treats that make it one of the most unique cruise experiences out there.
Let’s break it down.
🌴 First Impressions: A New Kind of Cruise Experience
The Carnival Mardi Gras is not your typical cruise ship. It’s 35% bigger than the previous Fun Ships, and it’s the first Carnival vessel divided into themed “neighborhoods” — each with its own vibe. From the New Orleans-inspired French Quarter with live music and moody lounges, to the Summer Landing’s laid-back BBQ scene, there’s a space for everyone.
The ship’s layout is spacious, and we loved the sea-facing Grand Central atrium, which transforms from a relaxing day hangout to an entertainment venue at night.
🍗 Food: Shaq’s Big Chicken is a Must
When it comes to cruise food, Caribbean ships often promise a lot — but Shaq’s Big Chicken absolutely delivers. Expect crispy, juicy chicken tenders and surprisingly addictive fries. It’s casual, it’s included, and best of all, the line moves quickly despite the buzz.
Pro Move: Guy’s Burgers deserves a visit, especially with the added space on this ship to avoid long waits. as it is near the teens club make sure you get there at a good time and not wait in line.
🎬 In-Room Entertainment: Free Movies?
One unexpected win for families (or anyone who just enjoys winding down with a movie after a day in port) is the lineup of free on-demand movies in the staterooms. “Sing 2”? Yes. Classic Disney favorites? Double yes. It’s a small thing, but it adds a lot of value — especially compared to other cruise lines that charge extra for every film.
🚢 Stateroom Surprises: Ocean Views
We booked an ocean view stateroom on Deck 4 and were greeted by a clean, thoughtfully laid-out room. Plenty of storage, cozy bed by the window, and yes! This was also across from the Family Harbor, which I absolutely loved, the family room was stocked with all kinds of snacks, its own ice cream machine and meals throughout the day.
Pro Move: Stop here before excursions and grab yourself some fruit, yogurts or snacks to take with you when exploring the Islands!
🎉 Entertainment & Nightlife: Energy for Days
The Sailaway Party was hands-down one of the most energetic events we’ve experienced at sea. The cruise director, TJ, set the mood high early and kept it rolling through the evening shows. We caught the welcome show in Grand Central, which had fun musical numbers and Caribbean party energy.
👎 The Downsides: Be Prepared
No Caribbean cruise is perfect, and Carnival Mardi Gras has its quirks. People have complained that embarkation can be slow however we did not experience this and I know there is a lengthy YouTube out there stating embarkation is bad. Again we walked right on with no issues. However, we also waited until our assigned boarding time to arrive which was 11am.
Also, while the ship is large, some venues (like the theater and piano bar) are too small for the number of passengers. If you’re interested in shows or live acts, get there early to snag seats — especially on sea days.
The comedy show on sea days had a line that was almost 45minutes pre-show to get a seat. And PLEASE DO NOT be those people that hold seats. It’s one thing when people run to the toilet but holding a seat for people that are late is just rude.
🌊 Worth It for a Caribbean Getaway?
Absolutely. Carnival Mardi Gras brings a mix of high-energy fun and relaxing island vibes, perfect for families and couples alike. You’ll get to explore vibrant Caribbean destinations like Aruba, Grand Turk, and Bonaire on itineraries that start at affordable rates (often from just $680 per person). And with included dining, splash parks, ropes courses, and that awe-inspiring roller coaster ride, it’s impossible to be bored.
✅ Final Verdict
For anyone dreaming of a Caribbean cruise with personality, the Carnival Mardi Gras delivers. Just remember: pack your sunscreen… and your patience.
