Do You Need a Passport to Cruise?

Cruise ship cabin desk with passports, cruise tickets, map, and sunglasses overlooking a coastal port town.

Passport rules depend on your itinerary, departure port, citizenship, and whether the cruise is closed-loop. This is one of the most important questions to answer before booking. Please work with your trusted travel advisor to understand the requirements for EVERYONE in your travel party. This is a quick and dirty answer to do you need a passport to cruise.

Quick Answer: Do You Need a Passport to Cruise?

A passport is strongly recommended for most cruises. Some closed-loop cruises from the United States may allow other documents for U.S. citizens, like Federal IDs and Birth Certificates, but a passport gives you more protection if something goes wrong during travel. You can read all the details by visiting the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol article on Closed-Loop cruising.

This is a hot topic as some travelers will tell you “not to worry” and others will tell you “Don’t Travel without one.”

What Is a Closed-Loop Cruise?

Closed-Loop Cruise Definition

Cruises beginning and ending in the same location are considered “closed-loop,” meaning they begin and end at the same port in the United States and travel within the Western Hemisphere.” This is the official definition of a closed-loop cruise according to the U.S. Border Customs and Border.

Examples of Closed-Loop Cruises

You board a ship departing Boston which is heading to Bermuda and back to Boston again. This is a closed loop. If you board a ship in Boston but end in Miami, this is NOT a closed loop. Most cruises beginning and ending in the same location are considered “closed-loop,” meaning they begin and end at the same port in the United States and travel within the Western Hemisphere.

Norwegian Cruise Line has a great page on the restrictions and requirements of closed-loop cruises.

When a Passport Is Strongly Recommended

To be honest. Always. You are goin on vacation, having your passport at the ready completely eliminates the worry about the boarding process and if your documents will be sufficient. You will also have the document you would need in case of a travel emergency and you need to board a plane quickly from any destination.

If you ever experience a medical emergency, and you have your passport at the ready or in the room safe, your medical evacuation will be that much easier.

When Other Documents May Be Accepted

Birth Certificate and Government ID

Cruises leaving Boston, New York, Florida and many other ports in the USA support closed loop documents. Your Birth Certificate with raised seal and a government issued ID will work. However you also need to check with each cruise line as they differ. Norwegian Cruise Line will not be the same as Carnival Cruise Line or Princess Cruise Line.

Why This Is Not Always the Best Choice

It is great that they get you on the ship but that does not guarantee these documents will be enough to get you off the ship and to another location in case of emergency.

Common Mistakes With Cruise Documents

Waiting Too Long to Apply

Passport processing can take time. Do not wait until the last minute, make an appointment and go get the passport application submitted. If your passport has expired, and your over 16, you can renew right online! They have made it super simple.

Assuming Every Cruise Has the Same Rules

Each cruise and cruise line comes with different rules and regulations. Check with your cruise line or your travel advisor to make sure you both understand the rules. Small example of this. In April when getting off in Bermuda, we needed to have our passports on us to get back on the ship. ( or official documentation ) we have never had to do this, we always used our Ship card.

Why this matters? 1 we were almost off the ship when we over heard it and had to ask security at the last minute. So ewe had to run back to the room. and 2 we had to walk around Bermuda with our passports and Birth Certificate on us. Scary if you loose your bags.

Using a Damaged Birth Certificate

Ask yourself. Would I be able to use this document at a local government office or no? Honestly, if your birth certificate looks that bad, than maybe just get a new copy to be sure.

Forgetting About Kids’ Documents

Children also need proper travel documents.especially if you need to take children out of the country and you have a 2 family household. Make sure you have all the legal documentation on hand to protect you and your child.

Passport Book versus Passport Card

This guy does a great job comparing the the differences between the 2 and some people confuse the strength of the passport card versus passport book.

Advisor Tip: Get the Passport Book

If you are investing in a cruise vacation, get a passport book when possible. It gives you the most flexibility and reduces travel stress. You are spending thousands of dollars on your vacation, why skimp when it comes to the passport. If you plan ahead, and do not need to pay for the rush service, the cost is about $165!

For $165, it removes the anxiety and stress when traveling. Do not start the trip in a worry, start with confidence.
